Netflix cancels Meghan Markle series after losing subscribers

After losing subscribers for the first time in more than a decade, Netflix on Monday canceled an animated series produced by Meghan Markle, the American wife of Britain’s Prince Harry, as part of a content-making contract the couple signed with the streaming giant.
Netflix confirmed in an email that it was halting the “Pearl” series project that was announced last July, citing “strategic decisions” also related to other animated series.

Harry and Meghan, who left the UK in 2020, set up a production company in California and struck a deal to create content for Netflix.

The series “Pearl” was to tell the story of a 12-year-old girl who is encouraged by famous women in her personal development.

Netflix confirmed in its statement that it will continue to work with the couple and their production company, Archewell.

And following losing subscribers for the first time in more than a decade, Netflix is threatened with recession following a decade of unbridled growth.

As soon as it was announced on April 20 that Netflix had lost two hundred thousand subscribers in the first quarter, or less than 0.1% of the total subscribers, Wall Street was worried, as shares of the giant group lost more than a third of their value in one session. The platform expects a decrease in net subscribers of up to two million subscribers in the second quarter.
