Those who had the opportunity to try Until Dawn were never the same following the last moments of their game. Frightening, distressing, breathtaking, … There was no shortage of superlatives at the time to praise PlayStation exclusivity. Chills, from the beginning to the hundred endings
When it comes to horror, the Supermassive Games studio has big ambitions, that’s for sure. Without however realizing them 100%, the teams have nevertheless offered, in recent years, entertaining games that managed to take us by surprise at times. such a jumpscare straight out of one of their last opuses of the anthology The Dark PicturesSupermassive Games has revealed a brand new project dubbed “ The Quarry ». Less in the mystical and more in the spirit of a slasher movietheir next game aims to be considered as the spiritual successor d’Until Dawn.
For this, the developers have planned everything! The title, which comes out in just under two months, launched its communication campaign around elements that it masters well. The horror, at first, as we saw with a broadcast of no less than thirty minutes of gameplay (as well as others screenshots as dazzling as they are disturbing). And, of course, its system of alternative endings which in particular makes the salt of each of the games and which will give a hard time to those who aspire to watch them all !
It’s Rewind time!
Nevertheless, and because the studio constantly seeks to advance its formula and expand its audience, The Quarry might be much less punitive than its elders. When you launch a game from Supermassive Games, you can sometimes expect to suddenly say ” goodbye » to the characters you meet or play as: a simple mistake during a QTE (Quick Time Event) can sometimes be fatal, and even the simple fact of moving the controller even just one centimeter can lead you to the loss of one of them. However, Will Byles, the game director, has found a solution to avoid mourning some players!
Death Rewind is a mechanic giving you a retry and unlocks following going through the story, or if you buy the Deluxe Edition of the game (…) You are essentially granted three “lives” which allow you to avoid death of a character at the cost of using one of these lives. You’ll be taken back to when you made a critical choice that results in the character’s death so you can make a different choice.
The idea is therefore to offer players a second chance so that they can save one of the characters they particularly like.. This will not reduce the surprise effect and the requirement of certain QTEs, but it has the merit of offering more control to players at the time of their second run or of rewarding those who got their hands on an edition improvement of the game: a new marketing strategy that makes you shiver!
