Microsoft Defender Antivirus causing excessive memory usage and other issues on Windows 10 PC

It appears that Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Antivirus can cause a number of serious issues on PCs running Windows 10 20H2. This is indicated by user messages, the first of which appeared regarding a month ago.

Microsoft Defender has been reported to be causing excessive memory usage. In some cases, during authorization in the system, a black screen may appear, preventing further loading for regarding 2 minutes. Users have also reported that, intermittently, Word 2016 and later versions of the application may not start or load for a long time. The Event Viewer behaves in a similar way.

Apparently, the problem with excessive memory usage is related to a bug that leads to a memory leak, which Microsoft was already aware of. It is assumed that this problem was first fixed in Windows 10 build 1.363.177.0 and then the developers released a fix. Judging by user reports, the problem with excessive memory usage is once more relevant, so we should expect that Microsoft will release a patch to fix it soon.

It is noted that the problem of excessive memory usage is related to the executable file of the anti-malware service MsMpEng.exe. In some cases, a temporary solution to the problem of excessive memory usage can be to disable online protection.
