« The people of Virginia deserve better “. This is the conclusion of the British parliamentary inquiry according to which the executive of the Virgin Islands, elected by the 28,000 inhabitants of the archipelago, embezzles millions of dollars of public money each year.

The British judge who led the investigation recommends that the British government temporarily take over power in Road Town to ” protect abuse Virginians from their leaders.

This instruction does not derive from the arrest of the prime minister Thursday. The investigation was launched fifteen months ago, but the publication of the conclusions was precipitated by the indictment of Andrew Fahie.

Necessary legislative and constitutional changes

If the recommendation is followed, the archipelago will be ruled from London, a measure “ undemocratic for Deputy Prime Minister Natalio Wheatley, who considers that it would mean, for Virginians, no longer having elected representatives and leaders.

British diplomacy believes that legislative and constitutional changes are necessary. The Minister of Overseas is leaving this Saturday for the Virgin Islands to discuss the future of governance in the territory.
