The minimum wage will increase on Sunday

Quebecers paid the minimum wage will benefit as of Sunday from an increase in income of $0.75 per hour. According to Quebec, this increase will benefit just over 300,000 workers. The minimum wage awarded to employees paid with tips also increases by 60 cents, to $11.40 per hour.

According to what was reported The newspaper, 60% of workers paid the minimum wage in 2021 were between 15 and 24 years old, and 70% of them were in shops, accommodation or restaurants. Nearly one in two people (47%) at $13.50 an hour worked in a company with fewer than 20 people in 2021, and 62% were there part-time. Nine out of ten employees had no children, and 30% did not have a high school diploma in their pocket.

The possibility of getting $15 an hour?

This increase should not be the last, according to what the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity, Jean Boulet, told the parliamentary office last month. “If the average hourly wage rises as expected, we will reach $15 [l’heure] presumably […]; we are inclined to go towards that and perhaps beyond.”
