In Uganda, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has been on an official visit to the country for three days since Wednesday. After meeting his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni, the two heads of state held a joint press conference. Among the points discussed: the security situation in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, plagued by an Islamist rebellion since 2017.

While some countries, including Rwanda, have deployed troops since July 2021 to fight these rebels, President Yoweri Museveni does not rule out sending Ugandan soldiers as well.
« Material for now, and troops if needed said President Yoweri Museveni alongside his Mozambican counterpart Filipe Nyusi. “ If the problem persists, we will have to mobilize and contribute, even in terms of staff “, he added, worrying regarding the proximity of East Africa to the Cabo Delgado region in northern Mozambique, affected by the Shebab rebellion since 2017.
Rwanda and SADC, the southern African organization, have already deployed troops in this region since last July. A month ago, President Filipe Nyusi once more called on the international community to come to his aid, noting that terrorists were still present on the ground.
During the press conference, Yoweri Museveni recalled the involvement of the Ugandan army in other countries. 6,000 soldiers are currently deployed in Somalia, and 4,000 are fighting the ADF group in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A military intervention in Mozambique would therefore also depend, according to him, on the evolution of the situation in the DRC.
