The pictures show what appears to be a crashed flying saucer, but it is actually the debris from the landing gear of the Perseverance rover which reached the red star last year.
The Ingenuity helicopter, on board the rover, made it possible to collect these confusing shots.
“It really sounds like science fiction,” Ian Clark, an engineer who worked on Perseverance’s landing system, told The New York Times. “Looks like another world.”
The data collected thanks to these photos will make it possible in the future to make landings safer for future space missions to Mars.
