Samsung has released a new variant of its T7, an excellent external SSD that connects via USB-C and offers very decent speeds, up to around 1 GB/s in reading and writing. the T7 Shield adopts a new design that swaps the aluminum outer shell for a reinforced rubber shell. What make it better resistant to shocks, but the manufacturer has also improved its resistance to water and dust, with an IP65 certification.
According to its designer, the T7 Shields must be able to withstand drops “up to three meters” (but damage caused by falls is not covered under the warranty) and especially splashes of water and dust. With an IP65 certification, don’t expect to save your data if the SSD spends time underwater, but a few drops or even a spilled glass on it shouldn’t scare it off, if you dry it out in the process.
It’s not the first reinforced SSD, but the T7 Shield manages to keep its small format (89 mm long, 59 wide and 13 mm thick), comparable to the standard model (85, 57 and 8 mm). The weight difference is substantial in itself, this reinforced model weighing 98 grams while the classic T7 is content with 58 grams, but it will remain a light and easy-to-carry accessory. Samsung still provides two cables, one USB-C and one USB-A and is marketing two variants, one 1TB at an advertised price of €170 and one 2TB at €320.
The three colors are already on sale on Amazon, at a real price still significantly higher than the suggested prices, like the T7 Shields 1 TB blue sold 194 € or the 2TB black model displayed at 359 €. For comparison, the classic T7 is on sale right now, so you can get it at 135 € for 1 TB or 200 € for 2 TB.
