Putin has the ‘political space’ to withdraw from Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has the “political space” to end his invasion of Ukraine, thanks in part to censorship in Russia, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday.

“Given the massive Russian support for what he is doing, the apparent indifference of the Russian media to what is really happening in Ukraine, the paradox is that Putin has a lot of political space to back up and walk away,” Boris Johnson said on TalkTV.

Russia says its invasion of Ukraine is a “special military operation” and has threatened anyone who gives a different version of events with jail.

As a result, Mr. Putin might tell the Russian people that the operation launched in Ukraine was “a success”, and that it is “technically a success”, Mr. Johnson said.

Russia has repeatedly warned of the possibility of the fighting in Ukraine escalating into a nuclear conflict, with the West sending increasingly powerful weapons to kyiv.

But Mr Johnson insisted the West did not need to make concessions despite the nuclear threat.

“I think he (Putin) has a lot of space, he has a lot of leeway,” he insisted.
