Sharjah: Bea is set to make the Emirate the first pollution-free city in the Middle East. As part of this, the construction of the first, waste-to-energy plant in the UAE has been completed in Sharjah. The project is now in the testing phase and the plant will help convert non-recyclable waste into clean energy, officials said. The new plant will contribute to the country’s clean energy sources and help reduce pollution across the UAE.
The waste to energy plant is a process that generates electricity from waste. It can convert 400,000 tons of waste into 80 megawatts of electricity per year. The Waste to Energy Plant project aims to convert 99% of bio-waste into energy.
The Sharjah plant will be able to remove up to 300,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfills each year. It will also provide electricity to 28,000 households in Sharjah. The plant is a joint venture between Bea Abu Dhabi and renewable energy company Masdar to develop the UAE’s waste to energy sector.
