The incidence of bankruptcy filings soared over the first three months of the year in Switzerland, with an increase of 18% to 1,190 insolvency procedures. The canton of Zurich was particularly affected by the phenomenon, bankruptcy filings having exploded there by more than 50% to 225 cases, according to the periodic statement compiled by the firm Dun & Bradstreet on the basis of commercial registers.
The Latin cantons are doing comparatively well. Geneva shows an increase of 12% to 163 cases and Vaud of 19% to 193 cases, when Friborg experiences a contraction of 27% and the Jura of 13%, lists the report released on Tuesday.
A notable exception, Neuchâtel shows a multiplication by more than two of the number of listed bankruptcies, to reach a modest 33 cases in absolute number.
Business creations remained strong across the country, despite a slowdown of 4% to 12,694 new registrations in the commercial registers. The Lake Geneva arc and the Rhône basin showed a modest acceleration of 1% to 2,845 new admissions. The Plateau and the North-East of the country, on the other hand, suffered declines of 12 and 7% respectively.
