Many car enthusiasts dream of owning a Ferrari one day, but only a handful of lucky people will be able to realize this dream. This is however the case of Quebec pilot and instructor Bertrand Godin, who has just got his hands on the object of his dreams: a Ferrari 308 GTS 1983.
To discuss it, he was invited to the microphone of the show The Car Guideon OLD radiomoderated by Antoine Joubert and Germain Goyer.
In memory of Gilles Villeneuve
If Bertrand Godin has long dreamed of being behind the wheel of this specific model, it is no coincidence.
“The first time I saw this car was in an American Express advertisement with the guy who inspired me to do motorsport, Gilles Villeneuve. You see it in his Ferrari 308 GTS and he says “Don’t leave without it” and then he drives off with the car. From then on, I had the poster of the 308 GTS in my room and I dreamed regarding it,” says the man who subsequently raced in Formula Atlantic, Formula 3000 and Formula 1600.
As in Magnum PI
The Ferrari 308 GTS is one of the models of the 80s that made a whole generation of enthusiasts dream. The general public became familiar with this legendary model, in particular thanks to the series Magnum P.I. Broadcast from 1980 to 1988, this American detective series featured the character of Magnum, played by Tom Selleck, at the wheel of his Ferrari.
“At the time, I was listening Magnum P.I. not to see the detective, but just to see the car, if only for a few seconds during the show,” remembers Bertrand Godin wistfully.
After having dreamed of it for decades, an opportunity finally presented itself to him recently, and he jumped on it. A friend who owned this coveted vehicle offered to buy it. “It mightn’t be better than that,” rejoices Bertrand Godin.
A first collector’s car
Recognized as an automobile enthusiast, Bertrand Godin found himself behind the wheel of a multitude of racing cars during his career. However, he never owned a so-called collector’s car. With this Ferrari which will soon mark its fortieth anniversary, he arrives in the world of vintage cars by scoring a home run.
“It’s a 308 GTSi, so an injection version. It’s a version discovery, which means “discovery” so it has a retractable roof,” he explains. Of course, he opted for a red color model, an imperative, according to him. “For me, a Ferrari has to be red! […] I didn’t want any other color,” he says.
Bertrand Godin also mentioned that he would participate in a few car rallies this summer so that Quebec enthusiasts can see it up close.
