Moldova’s president held an emergency security meeting on Tuesday following two Soviet-era radio towers toppled in the breakaway region of Transdniestria, and authorities in the region said a military unit was also attacked.

In Moscow, the Kremlin expressed grave concern following the collapse of the two radio towers.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: The news is of grave concern, and Moscow is closely following the events.

The authorities in Moldova are sensitive, especially since the Russian attack on Ukraine, to any sign of growing tension in “Transdniestria”, an unrecognized Moscow-backed pocket of territory bordering southwestern Ukraine.

Russia has had a permanent military presence in Transdniestria since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ukraine fears that the region will be used to launch new Russian attacks on its territory.

“In the early morning of April 26, two explosions occurred in the village of Mayak in the Gregoryopol region,” the Transdniestrian Interior Ministry said.

None of the residents was harmed in the two explosions, but the two radio towers that broadcast Russian radio programs were removed.

Separately, the Russian TASS news agency quoted the Transdniestrian Security Council as saying that a “terrorist attack” had targeted a military unit near the city of Tiraspol.

The agency did not give further details.

This comes following a number of explosions, reported by local television, on Monday, hit the building of the Ministry of State Security in Tiraspol, the capital of the region.

And local officials said: The unidentified attackers opened fire on the building from grenade launchers.

On Tuesday, President Maya Sandu called an emergency meeting of Moldova’s Supreme Security Council; to search it.
