Travel: The Swiss favor luxury holidays

After two years of the Covid crisis, the Swiss want to indulge themselves with first-class hotels and flights as well as distant destinations.

High-end hotels are popular with Swiss people deprived of exotic vacations due to the pandemic.

Many Swiss have not been able to travel as much as they would have liked in the past two years due to the Covid pandemic and travel restrictions. Suddenly, they catch up and do not hesitate to put their hands in their wallets to have fun on vacation.

Thus, both the Edelweiss and Swiss airlines have noticed: The demand for flying in “business” class has increased sharply, according to the “SonntagsZeitung”. Same phenomenon with travel agencies: luxury hotels are on the rise and the Swiss prefer distant destinations. Safaris in Africa or circuits in Latin America would be particularly popular.

A Kuoni spokesperson breaks down this trend. According to him, those who previously booked a middle-class hotel are now choosing a higher-class one. Hotelplan agrees and recalls that the Swiss were able to save money during the Covid crisis.

Almost insufficient supply

Same observation on the side of the luxury travel provider RSelection. He also confirms that the travel budget has indeed taken the lift this year. It is even experiencing a boom, according to him. The tour operator has indeed recorded four times more reservations in April than before the pandemic. To the point that the offer is becoming almost insufficient, like the safaris in Tanzania, almost full this summer, even though they sometimes cost, all-inclusive, 1500 francs per day and per person…

One caveat, however: both agencies and airlines have to deal with a new phenomenon, also caused by the Covid crisis: the short term. Indeed, more and more reservations are made at the last minute, the Swiss undoubtedly being wary of having to face new impromptu restrictions. But morale is high. The travel world expects European destinations at least to return to pre-crisis levels this summer.
