The PlayStation 5 will be updated this week to add the Variable Refresh Rate

Better late than never, and today PlayStation has announced that its console PlayStation 5 will finally receive a key technology for players, the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR / Variable Refresh Rate), and it will do so this week. In addition to the integration of technology, during the next few weeks at least 14 games will be updated to support this technology. Of course, remember that you need a television or monitor with HDMI 2.1 connectivity.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will begin rolling out to PlayStation 5 gamers around the world this week. On TVs and PC monitors that support HDMI 2.1 VRR, VRR dynamically synchronizes the screen’s refresh rate with the PS5 console’s graphical output. Optimizes the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts such as frame skipping and tearing.

Many PS5 titles experience smoother gameplay as stages render smoother, graphics are sharper, and input lag is reduced.* Previously released PS5 games can be optimized for VRR via of a patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

Over the next few weeks, the PS5 versions of these titles will receive patches to support VRR:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: A Separate Dimension
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

These are just a few of the PS5 titles that will support VRR and we’d like to thank their talented development teams. Visit their channels for more information, as you will be able to enjoy the best VRR experience when their patches are available.

First steps

VRR will be coming globally via a PS5 console update in the next few days (make sure you have an internet connection to receive the update). Once you’ve received the update, VRR will automatically turn on for supported games if your PS5 console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR-enabled TV or PC monitor. You can also disable it in ‘Display and video’ in the settings.

As an additional option, you can also apply VRR to PlayStation 5 games that are not supported. This feature can improve the video quality of some games. If unexpected visual effects occur, you can disable this option at any time. Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using, the game you’re playing, and the visual mode you’ve selected for a given game (if it supports multiple modes).
