This is something that had never been observed in the history of medicine, a young man in his twenties caused a tear in his lungs while masturbating. Indeed, the American magazine Radiology case reports recently published a study detailing this extremely rare case observed in Switzerland. The patient went to the emergency room of the Kantonsspital Winterthur with a strong cough and chest pain. After passing a battery of examinations, the doctors’ diagnosis quickly fell: the patient suffered from subcutaneous emphysema and spontaneous pneumomediastinum. A very painful lung injury that fortunately is not fatal and is quite common among younger people. It can be caused in particular by vomiting, a strong fit of coughing, or intense physical activity.
After being questioned, the young man revealed that he had started to feel the first discomfort while he was masturbating. After several searches, the doctors discovered that quite similar cases had already been reported. In fact, several people have suffered from the same type of lung infection following having sex. Nevertheless, the case of the said young man might well be a first. Therefore, the scientists wished to warn and invited to be vigilant in the context of the practice of masturbation. It should be noted, however, that other cumulative factors may have been partly responsible for this lung infection, the case is still being studied.
