Why Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 is so expensive

Very few noticed, yet Apple made a quiet introduction of its new Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable to accompany the Mac Studio and Studio Display.

When previous Keynote, Apple introduced two new products aimed at professionals. Indeed, the Mac Studio and its screen, the Studio Display, did not go unnoticed. One element has nevertheless gone unnoticed: the new Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable. The price of this accessory is 149 euros.

This 1.8 meter cable supports Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 data transfer at up to 40 Gbps, USB 3.1 Gen 2 data transfer at up to 10 Gbps, DisplayPort video output (HBR3) and a power supply of 100 W. It allows to connect the Mac Studio to the Studio Display.

Why is it so expensive?

This is the team ChargerLAB who took part in the dismantling of the cable, publishing the result through a YouTube video. In the latter, we can see a coaxial cable with 19 wires inside, with a woven protection waterproof and dustproof.

But that’s not all, since under the fabric, we discover another protection in thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) with a thin layer of foil for shielding. Among the 19 wires, there are 5 tinned copper wires used for the power supply as well as 2 white plastic covered wires used for the USB 2.0 transmission.

When we go into detail, Apple has implemented an Intel chip that manages the Thunderbolt connection and acts as a signal reconstructor. The various connectors have 24 pins each, all gold-plated.

Currently, the product is available at a price of 149 euros on the site d’Apple but there are also much less expensive alternatives on e-commerce sites.
