The accident occurred when one of the two cars wanted to turn into a side street. The other oncoming vehicle collided head-on with the car leaving the main roadway. The seven people in the two cars were injured. The most seriously affected is the driver of the hit car, who is kept in a coma. A child in this car was also seriously injured. Three other children and two adult passengers suffered minor injuries.
The Turnhoutsebaan (N19) had to be closed to traffic for a few hours following the accident.
