  • Vladimir Putin estimated on Thursday that his forces had taken control of Marioupol and ordered them to besiege the remaining Ukrainian fighters rather than storm the Azovstal industrial site where they are entrenched. A judged assertion « contestable » by Joe Biden, for whom he “there is no evidence yet that Mariupol is completely lost”. In addition to some 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers who refuse to surrender and are asking the international community for “security guarantees”, “regarding 1,000 civilians, women and children and hundreds injured” would also take refuge in this factory, according to Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • Joe Biden announced on Thursday a new military aid $800 million for Ukraine, which includes “heavy artillery weapons, dozens of howitzers, 144,000 munitions, as well as drones”. Washington also intends to provide additional economic aid of $500 million to keep the Ukrainian government functioning. Justin Trudeau, for his part, announced on Tuesday, April 19, the shipment of heavy weapons to the Ukrainians, without however specifying where the weapons would come from, what the volume would be or when they would arrive.
  • financial aid to Ukraine should be granted ” the most possible “ in the form of donations and not loans to prevent kyiv from accumulating a considerable debt which would complicate the recovery at the end of the war, insisted Thursday Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has estimated that his country needs $7 billion a month to compensate for the economic losses caused by the war.
  • Mr. Zelensky accuses Russia of seeking to organize bogus independence referendums in the regions of Kherson and Zaporijia which it occupies in the south of the country.
  • More than 1,000 civilian bodies are in mortuaries in the Kyiv region, a Ukrainian official said Thursday.
  • Three busesevacuation of civilians from the port of Mariupol arrived in Zaporizhia on Thursday. The Russian invasion has already pushed towards Ukraine’s neighboring countries – starting with Poland – more than five million Ukrainiansunheard of since the Second World War.
