Which alcohol has the most effect on our waistline?

We know that alcohol and its hidden sugars are really bad for the line and reducing your alcohol consumption is one of the first things to do when you start a diet.

But researchers at the University of Iowa (United States) have sought to find out if all varieties of alcohol have the same effect on our height. And the answer to this question, which they verified with 1,869 people between the ages of 40 and 69, is: no!

Better to drink red wine than beer

“Each type of alcohol contains unique nutrient profiles and percentages of alcohol by volume. Therefore, a strong preference for one type of alcohol has an influence on body composition when drinking it regularly” underline the researchers in their study published on the Wiley online library.

Researchers have found that regular consumption of beer or spirits is correlated with a higher waist-to-hip ratio (known as visceral fat). An effect that does not exist with red wine, due to its higher polyphenol content. Finally, the consumption of white wine has a more surprising effect, since it seems that those who consume it have a higher bone density.
