A fire at a Russian defense research institute kills and injures

Six people died on Thursday following a fire broke out at a defense research institute in the city, regarding 160 km northwest of Moscow, Russian news agencies quoted local authorities in the city of Tver as saying.

Authorities said 27 people were injured. The TASS news agency, citing emergency services, reported that at least ten people were missing.

Footage on Russian social media showed thick smoke and flames billowing from the institute’s windows. There was no official word on the cause of the fire.

The institute is active in space research, including with regard to a unified air defense system of the Commonwealth of Independent States composed of the republics of the former Soviet Union, according to the Russian Defense Ministry’s website.
