More than 100 alumni and staff of Colonia High School in New Jersey in the United States have developed a type of brain cancer in the past decades. The cause ? The possible presence of a uranium plant near the school.
In the United States, brain cancer is relatively rare, it is detected every year in 1 in 15,000 Americans. It was following this observation that Al Lupiano, a former student now 50 years old, was alerted: he, his wife and his sister – who attended the same high school – developed forms of brain cancer. “My sister found out she had a primary brain tumor. Unfortunately, it turned out to be stage 4 glioblastoma. Two hours later we learned that my wife also had a primary brain tumor“, he tells CBS New York. If he is now cured of his brain tumor, his sister died in early 2022, at the age of 44.
After sharing the diagnosis on his social networks, Al Lupiano then receives nearly a hundred messages from former school friends, also suffering from brain cancer.
