Wimbledon excludes Russians and Belarusians from 2022 tournament

A measure that is linked to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The organizers announced it on Wednesday. The current world No.2 Russian Daniil Medvedev will thus be deprived of a tournament, as well as Andrey Rublev (ATP 8), Karen Kachanov (ATP 28) and Aslan Karatsev (ATP 30).

Among the women, the former world No.1, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, and her compatriot Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 4) would be absent.

Elise Mertens will be deprived of her usual partner in doubles the Russian Veronika Kudermetova (WTA 4 in doubles).

The grass tournament will be played from June 27 to July 10.

Unlike almost all other sports, tennis has not excluded Russian and Belarusian athletes from its competitions. The only measure taken once morest them is the removal of the mention of their nationality.
