NHL: touching tribute to Mike Bossy before the Islanders’ 1st local game since his death

The New York Islanders paid a touching tribute to Mike Bossy on Tuesday ahead of their first home game since the team legend passed away at 65.

During a ceremony in memory of the late No. 22, the Islanders presented a commemorative video on the giant screen. Then followed a shower of chants “Bossy! Bossy! Bossy! that echoed through the UBS Arena.

Mike’s daughter, Tanya, as well as his granddaughters Alexe and Gabrielle, were then shown on the giant screen, and they were warmly welcomed.

Dozens of Islanders fans gathered in the amphitheater wearing the jersey of one of the great mavericks in hockey history.

Only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have reached 500 goals faster than Bossy in the NHL.

The Quebecer ended his brilliant career with 573 goals in 752 games, totaling six seasons of 60 goals or more.

A member of seven all-star teams, Bossy had his No. 22 retired by the Islanders in 1992.

Barkov does everything on his own; 11th straight win

The Islanders eventually suffered a 3-2 overtime loss whenAleksander Barkov completed his hat trick for the game-winning goal.

Barkov scored the 4-on-4 tie with 3:58 remaining in the game before giving the Panthers the win following 20 seconds of overtime.

Islanders pay tribute to Mike Bossy

The Floridians captain got in front of Ilya Sorokin and beat him with a fake backhand, for what was his 37th goal of the campaign.

The No. 16 of the Panthers, which was the third career hat-trick in the NHL, thus allowed his club to sign an 11th consecutive victory. The Panthers captain scored a 37th goal, a personal best.

Sebastian Aho and Jean-Gabriel Pageau had given the New Yorkers a 2-1 lead until Barkov got going.

By participating in two of Barkov’s three goals, Jonathan Huberdeau climbed to the top of the scoring column, just ahead of Connor McDavid, with 111 points.

Making his fifth straight start, Ilya Sorokin stopped 39 shots.
