A completely devastated building after a fire in Schaerbeek: twenty people must be relocated

Brussels firefighters intervened Sunday evening around 9:30 p.m. in Schaerbeek, for a fire in a building located rue Jacques Rayé. The building suffered severe damage. All the inhabitants, regarding twenty people, must be relocated.

“It is a five-storey building with an attic. The fire started in the kitchen on the third floor”, explained Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade, on Monday.

“It quickly spread to the fourth floor given that it’s wooden floors everywhere, and to the exterior wooden cladding of the back facade of the building, as well as through the stairwell. We had to ram several doors to check that no one was inside, but there were no injuries“, detailed the spokesperson.

“The whole building is uninhabitable, the third and fourth due to the fire, the other floors due to smoke damage and water damage, which seeped into the wooden floors”he continued.

“All the inhabitants were taken care of by the Brussels-North police zone and by the municipality of Schaerbeek. They were taken to a reception center during the work to extinguish the fire and will all have to be relocated. It’s regarding twenty people.”further specified Walter Derieuw.
