In June, the members of the Migros cooperatives vote on lifting the alcohol ban.

How the heads of the ten regional cooperatives feel regarding this was not yet known.

Two have now commented on this.

Their opinion is clear.

Should the alcohol ban fall, then sales in supermarkets can be expected next year.
The powerful bosses of the Migros cooperatives have so far remained silent on the subject of alcohol sales. Now two of them are showing their colors, she writes “Sunday Newspaper”. Jörg Blunschi, head of the Zurich cooperative, has a clear opinion: “I am in favor of Migros being able to sell alcohol in the future,” he says to the “SonntagsZeitung”. He is fully behind the clear yes recommendation of the Migros Cooperative Council in Zurich.
Blunschi receives support from his colleague from Central Switzerland. Guido Rast, who heads the Lucerne Cooperative, also positions himself. “Personally, I’m clear regarding selling alcohol,” says Rast. He is glad that it is now being voted on democratically. “I had a lot of discussions with customers. Opinions are divided. The outcome of the vote is completely open.”
Jörg Blunschi criticizes ex-Migros boss Herbert Bolliger, who is committed to a no in the ballot. «Herbert Bolliger is not just a member of the cooperative. He is the former Migros boss. That’s why I wished for a little more sensitivity on his part, »says Blunschi.
At the beginning of June, the 2.3 million members of the ten regional Migros cooperatives voted on whether alcoholic beverages might be sold in supermarkets in future or whether the status quo would remain. Migros is expected to provide information on the results in mid-June. If the answer is yes, the alcohol range can be expected to be introduced in 2023.
heated discussions
The sale of alcohol has been banned at Migros since 1928. Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler introduced the ban to promote public health, among other things. In order to lift the ban, the statutes would have to be changed.
This requires the approval of two-thirds of the voting members of the respective regional Migros cooperative. The lifting of the alcohol ban has been around for a long time heatedly discussed. For the proponents, the previous rule is no longer up-to-date.
The opponents, on the other hand, see a repeal as Betrayed in Duttweiler. According to the Blue Cross, the company risks losing its good reputation as a socially responsible wholesaler.
