Russia threatens to increase attacks on kyiv

In Mariúpol the situation is increasingly critical according to the authorities.

One day following suffering a symbolic defeat with the loss of the flagship of its fleet in the Black SeaOr, Russia’s Defense Ministry promised Friday to increase missile strikes on kyiv in response to alleged Ukrainian “military incursions” on Russian soil.

The threat to intensify attacks on the Ukrainian capital came following Russian officials accused Ukraine of an aerial operation targeting residential buildings in the Bryansk border region that reportedly left seven injured.

Authorities in another Russian border region reported similar attacks on Thursday.

Life in kyiv has been gradually returning to some normality following Russia failed to take the city and withdrew its troops from the north of the country to focus on a renewed offensive in the east.

The resumption of the attacks might force the population to take refuge in subway stations and live with the constant sound of anti-aircraft sirens.

Ukrainian officials did not confirm the attacks on targets in Russia, and the Russian authorities’ reports might not be independently verified. Ukraine did claim an attack on a major Moscow warship the day before. If true, it would be an important victory for kyiv.

The Moskva, a guided-missile cruiser named following the Russian capital, sank on Thursday while being towed to port following being heavily damaged in circumstances that remain unclear.

The Kremlin acknowledged a fire on board but no attack while officials from the United States and other nations might not confirm the cause of the fire.

The ship had a capacity for 16 long-range cruise missiles, and its withdrawal from combat greatly reduces Russia’s offensive capacity in the Black Sea.

The collapse is a serious blow to Moscow’s prestige in a war that is already considered by some to be a historic failure. Entering its eighth week, the Russian invasion has stalled due to resistance from Ukrainian fighters, bolstered with weapons and other aid from Western nations.

The Associated Press was unable to independently verify the incident, but Ukraine and its supporters consider it an iconic moment for the resistance. The country recently introduced a postage stamp commemorating the episode.

the president spoke

In his late-night address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Ukrainians on Thursday that they should be proud that they survived 50 days under Russian attack when the invaders “gave us a maximum of five.”

So even like-minded world leaders urged him to leave the country, questioning whether Ukraine might survive, he added. “But they didn’t know how brave we Ukrainians are, how much we value our freedom and the chance to live as we want.”

Listing the ways in which Ukraine has defended itself once morest aggression, Zelenskyy pointed to “those who have shown that Russian warships can sail far, even to the bottom” of the sea.

News regarding the ship overshadowed Russian announcements of advances in the port city of Mariupol, where they have been battling Ukrainian forces since the first days of the invasion at a terrifying cost in civilian lives.

they starve

A dwindling number of defenders are resisting a Russian siege that has trapped more than 100,000 civilians, who desperately need food, water and heating. David Beasley, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, said in an interview with the AP Thursday that the people still there are “starving.”

Mariupol’s mayor said this week that more than 10,000 civilians were killed and the death toll might exceed 20,000 following weeks of attacks and deprivation have littered the streets with bodies.

Capturing the city is critical for Russia as it would allow it to connect its troops in the south, which entered through the Crimean Peninsula it annexed in 2014, with soldiers in eastern Donbas, Ukraine’s industrial heartland. and the goal of the next offensive.

Pro-Russian separatist rebels have been fighting kyiv’s forces in the region for almost eight years.
