Horizon: Forbidden West offers Playstation gamers a new exclusive of choice. Aloy’s latest adventures embark players in a magnificent world populated by zoomorphic machines, each more dangerous than the next. If you were afraid that this episode would mark the end of the license, don’t worry, Guerrilla Games has other plans for its baby according to the creative director of the game.

Aloy one, Aloy two… Aloy three?

The Horizon games are a short but intense first-rate video game saga for Playstation and Sony. With Horizon : Zero Dawn et Horizon : Forbidden WestGuerrilla Games has made its license one of the references of the contemporary open-world. But more than just an open world, Horizon also offers players a thrilling adventure underpinned by a gripping sci-fi storyline.

Humanity, now reduced to its most rudimentary hours, struggles to survive in a devastated world, populated by machines resembling terrestrial fauna. Over the two opuses, we obviously learn more regarding the fate of humans and how these zoomorphic robots took over. Nevertheless, Guerrilla Games still has some revelations to share with us according to the game’s creative director. Attention, for those who have not yet discovered the adventures of Aloy, the following lines contain some spoilers.

In a recent interview with VG247Mathijs de Jonge, creative director at Guerrilla Games, spoke regarding the storytelling of the Horizon games as well as the paved way for the continuation of the adventures of Aloy.

Horizon’s heart is really regarding mystery; each of our stories centered on uncovering mysteries concerning both the ancient world and the present time, in which the games take place (…). Indeed, there are still a lot of background elements to exploit in order to develop new stories and create new mysteries from what we have already built. – Mathijs de Jonge, creative director at Guerrilla Games

With these statements, Mathijs de Jonge casually teases us with a new Horizon opus. A logical sequel if we look at how Forbidden West ends, similar to what Zero Dawn suggested.

To infinity and beyond the Horizon?

As Mathijs de Jonge explains, the Guerrilla Games teams have endeavored to lay solid foundations in order to exploit them over the long term. A principle that already applied to Horizon: Zero Dawn and which hinted at Forbidden West.

There is a conclusion to the story of the first game (Zero Dawn) but Aloy does not solve all the problems posed. In the end, there is always a terraforming system that needs repairs. And that was really where Fobidden West started. We knew we wanted to take the plot to a new area, and we had already mentioned the Forbidden West (…). We thought this area sounded really mysterious, intriguing and dangerous. That’s why we really wanted to set our story there. Besides, we still had storylines regarding the old world that we wanted to exploit. So we had a lot of material to work with, in addition to knowing where we wanted to go with Aloy’s story – and it all came together perfectly.

In a similar way, Forbidden West ends like its elder brother on a big cliffhanger. Knowing the end of this opus, it is possible to imagine Aloy’s next destination. Without going into details, Guerrilla Games once once more used its storytelling method with Forbidden West by establishing new assumptions for the sequel. Aloy might well go to other continents or even, if we believe the last meeting of our protagonist, in space! We will have to wait for the announcement of the next opus of Horizon (which should not arrive anytime soon).
