Mexican agents rescue mother and son from Cuba at the Rio Grande border

Mexico City, Apr 15 (EFE) .- Mexican agents rescued a Cuban woman and her son who were trapped in the Rio Grande, on the border with the United States, the National Institute of Migration (INM) reported this Friday in a statement .

The members of the Grupo Beta of the INM intercepted the migrants who “tried to cross illegally into the United States and were stranded in the middle of the Rio Grande because of strong currents” and transferred them to Mexican territory.

“After a medical check-up, they were reported in good health, and were under the protection of INM personnel in Acuña for notification to the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in the state, as well as the administrative immigration procedure” the institute said.

The Rio Grande has become a high-risk crossing for migrants seeking to reach the United States.

In the last week of March alone, the authorities intercepted 14 migrants who were trapped in the tributary, in addition to recovering two bodies from the riverbed.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) documented the death of more than 280 migrants in the border region between Mexico and the United States in the first seven months of 2021, according to its last available report from December, which exceeds 275 and 265 deaths. of 2020 and 2019.

The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.

Mexico deported more than 114,000 foreigners in 2021, according to Segob data.

“The INM of the Ministry of the Interior endorses its commitment to safe, orderly and regular migration, with full respect for the human rights of people in the context of mobility,” the agency promised this Friday.
