Russia’s intelligence chief Lt. Col. Vyacheslav Savinov has been confirmed dead in Ukraine. Vyacheslav, 40, was killed last month.
This brings to 32 the number of Russian soldiers in the rank of Lt. Colonel / Colonel killed in Ukraine. At the same time, seven Russian generals were killed in Ukraine. It is estimated that 31 officers of the rank of Major and 155 officers of the rank of Second Lieutenant to Captain were killed.
The loss of so many high – ranking officials during the month – and – a – half – long war has left the Russian military in a state of shock. It is rare for general officers to be directly involved in battle. But this happened in the Russian army.
Vyacheslav, who was also the deputy commander of the Russian Missile Troops and Artillery Wing, was killed in a fierce battle between Russian and Ukrainian forces in southern Ukraine. Vyacheslav, a married man and father of two, was previously part of Russia’s Syrian mission.
In addition to Vyacheslav, Alexander Bespalov, commanding officer of the 59th Guard Tank Regiment of Ukraine, was killed. His funeral was held in the Russian city of Osersk. Bespalov was killed in the battle of Harkiv.
Ukraine claims that 18,900 Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine so far. But Russia says this is an inflated figure. Russia’s official estimates put the death toll in Ukraine at 1351 until March 25.
