Today, many of us are forced to turn VPNs on and off several times a day. Some foreign services do not work without a magic button, while domestic ones, on the contrary, block traffic from foreign ip addresses. As a result, interaction with the smartphone turns into an endless series of switches, which cannot but annoy.
This problem is also relevant for users who use shareware services to bypass blocking with a limit on the amount of traffic. Keeping the VPN enabled in non-stop mode is simply unprofitable for them. We know how to make your service work automatically, and we will save you the pain.
The essence of the method is to create scripts that will be responsible for turning the VPN on and off when certain conditions occur, in our case, this is the launch and closing of applications. It’s simple: open the application – the VPN becomes active, close it – the client automatically turns off.
On the iPhone, such scenarios can be configured by the application “Teams» (Shortcuts). With it, you can automate most of the routine actions in your smartphone.
It should be noted right away: not every service is suitable for automation in its purest form. For example, some of them, following setting up the script, simply do not want to close. Others require setting up complex scripts with many conditions or installing an additional application «Action».

How to set up VPN auto-enable
- Open the “Teams” application and go to the “Automation” section;
- Click on the “Create automation for yourself” button;
- In the list of conditions that opens, select “Application”;
- At the next stage, we check that the checkbox “Open” is activated, and click on the inscription “Select”;
- We select applications for which VPN must be enabled at startup, and click “Finish”;
- In the new window, click “Add action” and select AdGuard client → “Set up VPN connection” action;
- We check that the parameter “Enable VPN connection” is selected as a variable and click “Next”;
- Disable the “Ask before launch” checkbox and confirm your choice in the pop-up window;
- At the last stage, we check the conditions for executing our script and run the application for verification.
How to Set Up VPN Auto Shutdown
In a similar way, the script is configured to automatically turn off the VPN following closing applications. You can go the other way and set the action to disable the client on opening only for those applications that do not want to work with the VPN turned on.
For this:
- Again, go to the “Teams” application and click “+” in the upper right corner of the screen;
- “Create automation for yourself”;
- As a trigger for the onset of the scenario, we once more select the opening of the necessary applications;
- At the stage of configuring the VPN action, change “Enable connection” to “Disable connection” by clicking on it once. Click “Next”;
- Turn off the “Ask before launch” item and click “Finish”.
As a result, we got two scenarios. We check them in work and enjoy the result.
In conclusion, we note that no one prevents you from having several VPN clients on your device at once. For example, if you have already purchased a subscription to one of the paid services, but you were unable to set up a script using it, you can only download AdGuard as an additional client and use it only to work with one or two applications.
