Also because a substitute Bayern professional became the big unlucky raven in the Allianz Arena.

FC Bayern Munich in the individual review

Manuel Neuer: Cleared one or the other long ball from the guests in the well-known Neuer manner and otherwise had a very quiet Tuesday evening … until the Spaniards’ first shot on goal hit the net behind him.

Benjamin Surname: Dressed in the back three on the right side and did his job confidently. The Frenchman won each of his seven direct duels, but was too high when he conceded a late goal together with his colleagues.

Dayot Upamecano: Got caught with a ricochet early in the game, but caught himself quickly. Upamecano radiated calm and was uncompromising, especially in defensive duels (60 percent duels won). Had a huge chance to make it 1-0, but fell behind when he finished (50′). At the decisive moment, the former Leipziger ran behind.

Lucas Hernandez: Had – like his two neighbors – hardly any problems with the mostly harmless Villarreal offensive. Hernández tried time and time once more to give crosses, but his crosses found no takers. However, the duel record when he was substituted read sobering (33 percent).

Leroy Sané: Was allowed to play as a right rail player from the start and was allowed to concentrate entirely on the offensive. In the first round, the national player acted predictably by repeatedly putting the ball on his strong left foot. A little more flexible following the change of sides, he initiated the first big goal chance through Upamecano (50th) with a pass into the backcourt. Overall, a rather below-average performance.

Joshua Kimmich: Worked tirelessly on the six and gave the ball magnet in midfield (91 ball actions). Anticipated well when Villarreal did manage to cross the halfway line and remained calm even when the opponents were under pressure.

Leon Goretzka: Still on the bench in the first leg, back on the pitch from the start in the Allianz Arena. Goretzka led the most duels on the Bayern side and mostly kept the upper hand (62 percent). Otherwise unremarkable on the way.

Kingsley Coman: Faced with the same fate as his counterpart Sané in the first half, the Frenchman improved noticeably in the second half. Coman made it 1-0 (52nd) with his strong ball capture and was then the significantly more dangerous of the two outside players.

Thomas Müller: Set up Lewandowski’s 1-0 and then appeared once more with a big chance to score (71st). However, Müller missed his header. Otherwise pale.

Jamal Musiala: Was noticeably trying to get creative and had the only real chance in round one with a header. However, the highly talented national player was in the best of hands in the physically strong defense of the Spaniards and hardly developed.

Robert Lewandowski: In the first half, the Pole only attracted attention with a yellow-worthy foul, shortly following the break he hit the net with his first successful action (52nd). But: Bayern’s permanent snapper once morest Villarreal didn’t have much to report.

Serge Gnabry (82 minutes for Musiala): Should bring some fresh air into the game. However, Gnabry did not succeed in this.

Alphonso Davies (87th for Hernández): What a bitter evening for the Canadian. Davies came on with two minutes remaining, nullified a Villarreal position for offside just seconds later and then let goalscorer Chukwueze rush.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (90th for Müller): Was thrown into the game as the last hope, but might no longer make a positive contribution.
