He’s playing the season of his life. But it should be the last in FCZ jersey for striker Assan Ceesay (28). The Gambier’s contract, with his outstanding 14 Super League goals and 6 assists, expires at the end of the season.
Now, according to Blick information, the signs point to farewell. This was despite the fact that during the winter break both sports director Marinko Jurendic and President Ancillo Canepa said Ceesay knew what he had at FCZ and that there were positive signals from the player for a contract extension.
Canepa told Blick in February: “During a conversation in December, Assan assured us that he wanted to extend his contract. In the next few days we will sit together once more.”
The talks have been going on for months
So far, however, the leader has been able to extend the expiring contracts with regular players Mirlind Kryeziu (25), Blerim Dzemaili (36) and Antonio Marchesano (31). But neither with Ceesay nor with midfielder Ousmane Doumbia (29).
The talks are still going on at Ceesay and at Doumbia. But the situation is becoming more and more reminiscent of the case a year ago regarding homegrown Toni Domgjoni (23), when he also stalled FCZ, but then switched to Vitesse Arnheim on a free transfer.
Where do you think Ceesay is headed in the summer? Open minded. It is clear that the record goalscorer of the Gambian national team can earn significantly more elsewhere than in Zurich.
Now the former flop would be valuable once more
The bitter thing for FCZ: Ceesay was bought in a hurry from Lugano in 2018 following Michael Frey left Fenerbahce – for a whopping 2 million. Now the former transfer flop Ceesay, which was unthinkable until the current season, would actually be worth such a sum once more. But because the striker is now on a free transfer, Zurich cannot solve them.
Coach André Breitenreiter sees any departures pragmatically. He has repeatedly said he knows the business of football well enough to know that sometimes players just want to move on.
