Iván Duque speaks about peace before the UN Security Council – Peace Process – Politics

Before him Security Council of the United Nations Organization (UN) the head of the UN Mission in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, and the President of the RepublicIvan Dukepresented a balance of the implementation of the peace agreements.

UN verification mission in Colombia

Carlos Ruiz-Massieu The meeting began by presenting to the Security Council the Quarterly Report of the UN Secretary General on the Verification Mission in Colombia.

First of all, the head of the UN Mission assured that the last elections were safe. In addition, he highlighted the process of reincorporation into civilian life and their participation in productive projects and economic endeavors, as well as the land titling process.

Ruiz Massieu assured that violence continues to be one of the main difficulties for peace signatories to consolidate their life project. And although the head of the Mission recognized the efforts of the national government, he suggested that more should be done.

The head of the Mission also suggested an investigation into the disputed military operation in the Putumayoin which there were 11 deaths.

Peace with Legality

President Iván Duque began his speech with a balance of the Peace with Legality policy. He said that following the signing of the peace agreement there was the presence of other illegal armed groups and, for that reason, Peace with Legality served as a guide for the implementation of what was agreed in Havana.

Duque highlighted the advances in the process of reinstatement of the signatories of the agreement and support for 12,826 ex-combatants in the process of reincorporating into civilian life, where, according to official figures, 8,556 ex-combatants have a productive project through 4,063 individual and collective projects.

He also assured, regarding the components for the victims of the conflict, that the Government promoted the extension of the victims’ law for another 10 years, with the support of Congress. He also highlighted the election of the 16 special constituencies of peace.
