During a check, he fled… with a police car

A resident of Vielsalm appeared Monday before the Eupen Criminal Court, which accuses him, among other things, of having fled in a police vehicle, during a check, on December 22, 2021, in Bullange.

The defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle on a roundregarding in Bullange. When the police wanted to subject him to a blood alcohol test, the 30-year-old asked for the legal deadline before blowing. During this time, he took the opportunity to get into a parked police vehicle and flee.

“He drove for two kilometers before being intercepted by a second police vehicle. The defendant indicated that he had health problems requiring medication. He was taken to Saint-Vith hospital. During the transfer, he urinated in the wetsuit”said the prosecutor before continuing: “After being examined, he refused to walk to the suit. He had to be carried by the police.” He then became insulting towards the police officers.

The public prosecutor is demanding a sentence of 100 hours of work or 8 months in prison for these facts.

Preventions which are not disputed, apart from the theft of use. On the defense side, we consider that it is rather a refusal to comply which was manifested by this way of fleeing.

For the defense lawyer, who argues in favor of a suspension of the pronouncement, he had no intention of removing the vehicle from the property of the police.

Judgment May 9.
