A dramatic accident occurred on Monday morning in the inner ring of Brussels near Wemmel. For some unknown reason, a pedestrian ended up on the highway and was fatally hit by a truck around 6 a.m. This accident caused major traffic jams.
Every year, there are between 20 and 30 accidents involving a pedestrian on a highway. In 2020, 19 accidents were recorded by Vias, the Belgian road safety institute, causing seven deaths and two serious injuries. In 2019, 23 accidents occurred with 14 fatalities and four serious injuries. Looking at the figures for the last fifteen years, however, there is an overall decrease in the number of accidents involving a pedestrian on the motorway. The peak was reached in 2013 when 32 accidents occurred with 15 fatalities and nine serious injuries.
