Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country is at war with Russia, wants to make a statement to the African Union (AU), announced Senegalese President Macky Sall.
The two men had a telephone conversation on Monday, a month following the interview between Macky Sall and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I also noted his request to make a communication to the AU,” said Sall, who is also the current president of the African Union, on Twitter.
“We discussed the impact of the war in Ukraine on the world economy and the need to favor dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict”, also noted the AU President.
The Ukrainian presidency also commented on the telephone conversation between Zelensky and the AU chairman. “He (Zelensky) took note of the statement of the African Union dated 24-02 on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and informed him of our fight once morest the invasion and the heinous crimes of the Russian aggressor,” the Ukrainian presidency tweeted.
In a statement signed by Macky Sall and Mahamat Faki Moussa, chairman of the AU commission, the continental body had expressed its “extreme concern at the very serious and dangerous situation created in Ukraine”.
The two men also called on Russia to imperatively respect international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Ukraine.
