After an incident that was caught by the cameras and sparked widespread controversy in Egypt, the vice president of Zamalek club submitted his resignation following a video spread in which he was seen hiding a medal in his pocket during the handball team’s award ceremony for the second place prizes for the Egypt Cup competition, which was won by the Alexandria Sporting team.
And a video that was widely circulated on Saturday morning revealed that Major General Mustafa Hadhoud, Vice President of Zamalek Club, hid a silver medal in his pocket during the ceremony of his team’s awarding of second place prizes in the final match of the Egypt Handball Cup, which was held on Friday and was won by Sporting for the first time in its history.
The video received widespread criticism and ridicule on the communication sites, and in this regard, Counselor Mortada Mansour, President of Zamalek, decided to hold an emergency session to discuss the matter and take a position towards his deputy, considering that the incident was an insult to the history and traditions of the ancient club.
Hours before the council convened, Hodhoud announced his resignation from his position, expressing his anger at Mortada Mansour’s decision to call for an emergency session without his knowledge and without listening to his point of view.
In justifying the incident – during a press statement – the vice president said that the medal was silver and he did not mean to seize it, but rather put it in his pocket until the end of the ceremony and give it to his team players because it is their right, adding that the winning club received gold medals and as soon as it discovered that the presented medal was silver it received until He gave it to his team following the ceremony.
He continued, “I was handing the gold medals to the Sporting team, and I might not get involved in a situation like this, as I am a responsible man, indicating that he spoke with Mohamed Amin, head of the Hand Federation, and agreed, to receive the medal, which was more than the number of players.”
And following the end of the matches of the White Club teams yesterday in the football, volleyball and hand competitions, the Zamalek club’s board of directors announced the acceptance of Hodhoud’s resignation and with unanimous approval.
Mortada Mansour confirmed that Major General Hadhoud submitted his resignation from his position following confirming the error he had caused, explaining, according to an official statement, that the resignation submitted by the Vice President of Zamalek was a respectable step from him and he thanked him for what he had done.
He said that the club will remain a fortress of patriotism and dignity in Egyptian sports.
Mustafa Hadhoud is a former major general in the Egyptian army. He held the position of Governor of the Beheira. He also held several military and political positions. During the last elections that took place in Zamalek club last February, he won the position of vice president of the club on the list of Mortada Mansour.
