Considering how terrible Marvel’s Avengers was at launch, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was a welcome surprise in terms of gameplay, storytelling, and visuals. The overall critical reception was very positive, but unfortunately, initial sales “did not live up to” publisher Square Enix’s “initial expectations”.
At the BAFTA Video Game Awards, Eurogamer had the chance to speak with members of the development team such as creative director Jean-Francois Dugas and senior director of storytelling Mary DeMarle. When asked regarding sales, Dugas said:
I think it’s a great attraction. She is emotional. It has many advantages.” Is the game perfect? Like any other game, no, I don’t think it’s perfect. It can always be better. But is this attraction really that good? And is it worth spending your time on it? Honestly, I I think yes.
He also stated that he “regrets nothing”:
“We did our best, but this is the reality of the market. And let’s not forget that this is a new IP. Even if we say that all the Guardians of the Galaxy are known, this is still a new IP in the video game market. Perhaps many people do not even know that the game has already been released, or are not sure what exactly it is.
The recent launch on Game Pass – for which Microsoft allegedly paid between $5 million and $10 million – has seen some improvements.
DeMarl said the following:
For me, it’s all regarding making the game. What I love now is that people, especially those on Game Pass, are playing it and sharing their experience. We make games to touch people’s feelings, we make games to impress the audience. And it’s great that she finds her audience, and it’s great that she continues to develop.
Will there ever be a sequel? Arc does not want to promise anything, but does not exclude such a possibility.
We don’t talk regarding the future right now because every time we close a project, it’s time to wrap up work, finish it, and take a vacation. So I think in the coming months or years we will find out what we will work on next, so we’ll see.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is currently available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
