Will Smith’s ban and his resignation from The Academy came following the actor slapped the comedian Chris Rock on the stage of the 94th Academy Awards.

During the event, as Rock walked on stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, the comedian made a joke regarding Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to her bald head and comparing it to Demi Moore’s GI Jane.

Pinkett Smith himself is known to suffer from alopecia and has discussed it publicly.

It should be noted that The Academy’s penalty was to ban Smith from attending AMPAS events, including the Oscars, for ten years.

Usually the winner of the previous year’s Best Actor/Actress will announce the award for next year.

However, with the sanctions, Will Smith did not deserve to do it.

Additionally, it’s also worth noting that the Board of Governors’ decision to ban Smith from their show for a decade didn’t prevent him from being nominated or winning another Oscar during that time, he just wouldn’t be there to accept the trophy if he won.

Earlier, in an official statement, The Academy announced that Smith had been barred from attending the Oscars for a period of 10 years, starting Friday, April 8, 2022.

Smith will not be permitted to attend any The Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.
