This event was expected with even more excitement than the first deliveries from the Gigafactory near Berlin two weeks ago: As in Germany with a party, but even bigger, Tesla celebrated the opening of its second factory in the US state of Texas on Thursday evening Year. As a climax, CEO Elon Musk delivered a speech declaring that no company has ever reached the scale of Tesla before announcing the start of Model Y deliveries from the new factory. These are said to be the first Tesla electric cars to contain battery packs made from the 4680 cells developed and produced in-house. However, there was no technical data on this.
Tesla boss cheered in Texas Gigafactory
The kick-off party in Grünheide near Berlin, Germany, was called Delivery Day for the Gigafactory in Texas Tesla had chosen the motto Cyber Rodeo. In both cases, the guests were able to visit the production largely freely and were treated to techno music before CEO Musk’s performance was on the program at the end. In Texas, too, the governor and a senator from the state are said to have been among the visitors, but unlike before in Germany, there were no speeches by politicians.
Of course, CEO Musk came onto the prepared stage – as expected, a little later than announced and wearing a cowboy hat, sunglasses and a T-shirt with the Cyber Rodeo logo. As with most of his appearances, the jubilation was great, especially since the Tesla boss had an announcement: This year, the beta test with the autopilot software FDS will be extended to all of North America, Musk said first, following briefly the previous one history of Tesla.
However, the Tesla boss did not reveal any new information regarding the Model Y from the new factory. He merely repeated that the frame of the electric car from the new Gigafactory consists of only three elements: A huge cast part from the Giga press at the front and back and the battery pack in between, in which the 4680 cells are part of the supporting structure. This is a revolution and radically simplifies production, Musk explained. The production line for the Model Y in Texas has the highest annual capacity in the world at 500,000 units.
Then Musk spoke once more regarding the important thing Topic size, which should be “extreme” at Tesla, and also mentioned the robot first discussed at AI Day in August 2021. “Let’s deliver the first Tesla cars that were produced in Texas,” the CEO said followingwards, before a number of Model Ys (different colors than in Grünheide) drove past him across the stage. But none of them stayed put, and the CEO didn’t give any technical data either. It is known, however, that Model Y with 4680 battery a new certification should get. Because it might have a different capacity and the design might affect the weight.
No deliveries of Model Y documented
Strictly speaking, it is not even certain whether the first customers actually got their Model Y during the Cyber Rodeo in Texas. In any case, there were no handovers in the live stream that ended with Musk’s performance. A good hour later, no happy new owners reported on Twitter either, so it was joked that they might have signed non-disclosure agreements. So on Thursday, Tesla had a big party and gave Musk a general outlook on the future. Details of the highly anticipated Model Y with new construction and 4680 batteries but will probably come later.
