Kaoru Mitoma started the season as a substitute for Union. The Japanese winger put up with it: “It’s true, but it’s normal. I played well several times and I also scored, which allowed me to earn my place in the starting team. I also integrated more and more into the team and my teammates helped me a lot to feel comfortable here,” Mitoma told Het Nieuwsblad. The turning point was the game once morest Seraing, which he single-handedly knocked down. “We were down 0-2 to ten, but I scored a hat-trick. It gave me great confidence because it was the first time in my professional career that I was able to score three goals. It gave me a lot of adrenaline because the atmosphere in the stadium following those goals was fantastic.”

During winter vacation, Kaoru Mitoma injured his ankle. It didn’t look very good for the Nippon. “I had time to rest, but my injury seemed more serious than I thought. I doubted that I would be able to get back to my old level, because my recovery took longer than expected. But luckily everything is going well now”, assured the Unionist.
