Two villas belonging to a TV presenter close to Russian President Vladimir Putin have become the target of attacks in Italy. According to authorities on Tuesday, an arson attack was carried out on the villa of Russian journalist Vladimir Soloviev on Lake Como in northern Italy. A second villa in the area had red paint poured into the pool.
Soloviev is one of the most well-known supporters of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Every evening he promotes the war on his show. He owns a total of three properties on Lake Como with a total value of eight million euros. They were frozen by Italian authorities in early March, along with the assets of other Russian Putin allies, under sanctions over the Ukraine war.
The villa affected by the fire is currently being renovated. According to authorities, some tires were set on fire there, which were quickly extinguished. “It was a very small fire, with little material. There is practically no damage,” said the head of the Como fire department, Gennaro di Maio, to the AFP news agency.
«Akt des Protests»
According to the mayor of the municipality of Menaggio, Michele Spaggiari, it was obviously “an act of protest”. Soloviev had bought the villa five years ago, “but up until a month ago none of my fellow citizens knew” who the owner was, Spaggiari told the AGI news agency. According to media reports, the police are investigating.
At a second Soloviev villa in Pianello del Lario, blood-red paint was sprayed on the facade and dumped into the pool, according to a video from the Ansa news agency. The slogans “Murderer” and “No War” were written on the facade.
