Academy discusses ways to punish Will Smith for ‘awarding assault’ on the 8th
(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Yoon-seop Jeong = The Academy is discussing a separate punishment for Smith while Hollywood actor Will Smith, who caused an ‘attack on the prizewinner’ at the Oscars, voluntarily resigned from his academy membership.
The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which hosts the Oscars, announced on the 6th that it had decided to hold a meeting to discuss the punishment of Will Smith on the 8th (local time), 10 days earlier than planned.
Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards on the 27th of last month for jokingly joking his wife, who suffers from alopecia. He later issued an apology and resigned himself from his academy membership.
The Academy initially held a board meeting on the 18th to discuss disciplinary measures such as member expulsion and suspension, and to give Smith an opportunity to explain in accordance with the procedure, but when he resigned, the meeting schedule was moved up.
Academy President David Rubin said: “The Board of Directors is convening on the 8th to discuss possible punitive measures for Smith’s conduct.
Smith previously announced that he would face any additional penalties when he resigned from his academy membership.
