Epic Games launches RealityScan application to create 3D models from phone images

Epic Games has announced a new smartphone app that can create 3D models of objects from a series of smartphone images.

The idea is that you’ll be able to use the app, called RealityScan, to scan an object in the real world — for example, a chair — and then introduce the scan of that object into your game or project.

The app is currently available in beta via Apple’s TestFlight platform that will be open to 10,000 users.

To take a series of photos in the demo, you can hold down the capture button or take the shots individually, and as you do you will need to slowly move around the object to take different shots. The app requires you to take at least 20 photos, according to The Verege.

Once the scanning is done you can submit the model to be uploaded to Sketchfab, a 3D modeling platform, and following a few minutes, you will be able to see the survey you have done on the site.

The app can be a useful tool, to quickly create 3D models using just your smartphone. The Early Access version is set for iOS, and the Android version of the app is scheduled to launch later this year.
