A first GM Canada electric vehicle manufacturing plant will start production in 2022, thanks to investments of nearly $2 billion, the company announced Monday.
Together with the governments of Canada and Ontario, GM Canada will invest $2 billion to transform its facilities in Ingersoll and Oshawa, creating 2,600 jobs in the country’s most populous province.
“This investment will secure 2,600 jobs here in Oshawa and is a huge win for the people of Durham and Ontario’s auto sector. It shows once once more that the cars of the future will be made right here in Ontario, by Ontario workers,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
The project is divided into phases, namely the production of BrightDrop electric vans at the Ingersoll plant from the end of 2022 and the addition of a third production shift at the Oshawa plant. Thus, Oshawa will become the company’s only plant to produce both heavy and light trucks.
“This is proof that the Canadian auto sector is here to stay for the long haul. Today’s announcement represents more jobs, more clean vehicles and greater economic growth for all Canadians,” said Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François- Philip Champagne.
GM Canada took the opportunity to announce that it will participate in the Diversity Challenge and Canada’s Zero Emissions Challenge.
