Epic Games is working on a promising iPhone application that allows you to 3D scan real objects to easily integrate them into a video game setting.
Epic Games is certainly known to the general public for its famous game Fortnite. But the studio has also made a name for itself with some impressive technologies of its own. We obviously think so to the Unreal Engine that we find even in the world of cinema and also used in the MetaHuman project to create ultra-realistic avatars.
Today, the American company is making headlines once more with RealityScan, an application currently in beta on the iPhone. As we can see below in the official presentation video, the app in question allows you to take a picture of an object or piece of furniture near you in order to scan it and generate a 3D model of the captured item.

Subsequently, the user will be able to use the 3D model thus created and integrate it as they wish into their video game decor. In the video, a person can be seen making an impressively realistic 3D model of a sofa. Note however that The Verge was able to try the beta and his few attempts to scan an office chair are very far from successful. There is still a lot of progress to be made.
A full beta program
Nevertheless, the idea remains interesting and might allow certain creators to create sets more easily for their video games or for other possible projects that might benefit from such technology. On the official website of the project, Epic Games explains that it has worked in partnership with the firm Quixel while basing itself on an already existing service called RealityCapture.
Capturing real-world items for digital experiences has traditionally been complicated, technical, and laborious. Now in limited beta, RealityScan takes what people love regarding RealityCapture — fast and easy 3D scanning — and puts it in the hands of anyone with a smartphone, turning their cameras into an endless source of creativity.
Unfortunately, if you want to join the beta program, know that you will have to wait. At the moment, the maximum number of testers allowed has already been reached.
