PlayStation: A prototype intended for the PS1 resurfaces

Game news PlayStation: A prototype intended for the PS1 resurfaces

The history of video games is so dense that it is no longer rare, these days, to find forgotten treasures. Among these vestiges of the past, the prototypes retain an important place in the discoveries that can interest thousands of players. And the one that falls to us today was intended for the first version of the PlayStation!

The character of Gex does not have the same aura as Mario or Sonic, but he was an important figure in the world of video games in the 1990s. Indeed, at the time, the Crystal Dynamics studio believed in 3DO and so he did everything to develop his own mascot. Unfortunately for the gecko (a small lizard), the console designed by Trip Hawkins crashed completely and the game, Gexvery quickly transitioned from its original medium to PC, Saturn, and PlayStation. It then evolved on several platforms with Gex : Enter the Gecko and Gex 3 : Deep Cover Gecko. And these games are far from bad (except on Game Boy Color)!

AN EXHUMATED GEX JUNIOR PROTOTYPE

A day following April Fool’s Day, a video surfaced revealing the existence of an unknown platform game: Gex Jr! Never announced, it was in development at the time of the first PlayStation and seemed rather funny with its lizard in caps evolving in a colorful universe. We can even discover references to Who wants to be a millionaire?, Star Wars or Teletubbies. The extract is short, but it shows that the video game has definitely not finished surprising us.
