Wargaming, the studio behind the hit game World of Tanks, released an official statement announcing the withdrawal of its activities in Russia and Belarus. Its flagship game will be run by a small local studio not affiliated with the company. The Minsk studio is also being closed. A direct consequence of the war and geopolitical situation that reigns between Russia and Ukraine. Here is the statement made, reported by Eurogamer:
On March 31, the company transferred its live gaming operations in Russia and Belarus to the local management of Lesta Studio, which is no longer affiliated with Wargaming. The company will not profit from this process, either now or in the future. On the contrary, we expect to incur substantial losses as a direct result of this decision.
We will complete the operational transition as expeditiously as possible, while remaining in full compliance with all laws and ensuring the continued safety and support of our employees. During the transition period, live products will remain available in Russia and Belarus and will be operated by the new owner.
The company is therefore deprived of one of its strongest licenses. No clue seems to point to a project that would replace it. Is this the price to pay for remaining aligned with one’s convictions? Anyway, Wargaming thus joins the ranks of Microsoft, CD Projekt or PlayStation having stopped their activities with Russia since the beginning of the conflict.
