Game news PlayStation Plus Premium: PS3 games soon to be downloaded?

A few days ago, Sony unveiled the three new PlayStation Plus formulas. Confined until now to a single offer, the service will be completely redesigned to be incorporated into PlayStation Now. From June 2022, players will be able to subscribe to the Essential, Extra and Premium offers. The latter, which is the most complete, has nevertheless given rise to frustration and Sony is currently in full reflection to remedy this. Recall of facts.

Available in three offers, the PlayStation Plus expands its range and offers several variants to fit the habits of the PlayStation community. The most accessible subscription concerns the Essential option which resembles, more or less, the service of the moment with two games to download per month, promotions, backups in the cloud and access to online gaming. The hybrid formula, called Extra, adds a catalog of 400 PS4 and PS5 games to download, like Xbox Game Pass. Finally, and this is the section that interests us, the PlayStation Plus Premium completes all the elements mentioned above with demos (temporary access to the big games in the PlayStation Studios catalog) and the addition of 340 additional games from the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP catalog. All these games will be playable in streaming or downloadable… except for the PS3 which is not emulated for the moment.

A SOLUTION TO DOWNLOAD PS3 GAMES?

It’s a fact, streaming only delivers its potential to people with fiber access, which is far from being the case for all French people. Also, being able to download the games makes it possible, if not to benefit from them directly, to access them without visual loss and parasites (jerky animation, etc.). Sony is well aware of the disappointment caused by this story of PS3 games only playable in streaming and is actively considering an alternative. According to journalist Jeff Grubb, the manufacturer would consider programming its own PS3 emulator, even if it will take some time. Indeed, the Sony machine has the particularity of being equipped with a CELL architecture that is not very obvious to wear on the technologies of the PS4 / PS5. Case to follow therefore, but the fact that it is envisaged by Sony is already good news. In the meantime, this will not prevent players opting for the Premium formula from enjoying a catalog of 340 PS, PS2 and PSP games, in addition to 400 PS4 and PS5 games.

As for the PS Vita…
